MONFRAGÜE NATIONAL PARK

The Mediterranean Forest

Located in the heart of Extremadura in western Spain, Monfragüe National Park is one of the best-preserved examples of Mediterranean forest and scrubland in Europe. This protected area is celebrated for its dramatic landscapes, rich biodiversity and exceptional birdlife. Shaped by the Tajo and Tiétar rivers, its landscape is defined by dramatic rocky cliffs, rolling hills, dense Mediterranean forest and open dehesas that create a unique and breathtaking environment.

Internationally renowned as a paradise for birdwatchers, Monfragüe is home to more than 200 bird species, including some of Europe’s most emblematic birds of prey. Visitors can witness the majestic flight of the Spanish Imperial Eagle, the Black Vulture, the Egyptian Vulture and the Black Stork soaring above the park’s iconic cliffs such as the Salto del Gitano. This extraordinary biodiversity makes Monfragüe a leading destination for ornithologists and nature enthusiasts from around the world.

Beyond its wildlife, the park offers a deep sense of tranquility and authenticity. Ancient castles, traditional villages and centuries-old pastoral landscapes reflect a harmonious relationship between people and nature. Whether hiking scenic trails, photographing birds and spectacular sunsets or simply enjoying the silence of untouched wilderness, Monfragüe National Park invites visitors to experience one of Spain’s most extraordinary natural treasures.
